Hello Friends!!

A couple of months ago, Yellow Pages Australia contacted me to see if I would be interested in joining with them to help get the word out about their upcoming Capture the Cover photography competition.

Umm, heck yes I am interested! How exciting. I do love me a good photo comp!

Here’s today’s official competition announcement:

YELLOW PAGES® ANNOUNCES NEW CAPTURE THE COVER COMPETITION

Yellow Pages® is calling on budding Adelaide photographers to show off their own talents as well as their community’s hidden gems on the cover of its four 2014 Adelaide metro books.

Following a successful first year in 2012, Yellow Pages®’ Capture The Cover photographic competition is back, once again giving locals the chance to have a say in the images that represent their community on the cover of their local phone book and exposing their happy snaps to thousands of residents.

Judged by Adelaide photographer Mark Kimber, the competition will aim to celebrate little-known local spots on each cover under the theme Only Locals Know.

“It might be a favourite quiet place, the best spot to watch the sunset, a hidden piece of graffiti or even the tastiest coffee only locals know about,” Mr Kimber said.

“Capture The Cover is a great opportunity for locals to gain exposure and see their work in print. It is also a great way to highlight and celebrate what makes Adelaide such a great place to live – whether that’s the beach, bush or parklands.”

Last year, locals from Evanston Park, Christie Downs, Nairne and Largs Bay were among more than 350 winners across Australia to have their photos featured on the cover of their local directory.

Sensis Marketing Specialist Beth Kyle said the outstanding response and positive feedback on the covers had secured Capture The Cover’s future for another year.

“We were overwhelmed by the photographic talent in Adelaide last year as well as the enthusiasm locals showed for their community through their shots,” she said.

“With the help of thousands of entrants we were able to produce covers that best reflect the diverse regions in our cities, showcasing what locals love about where they live and highlighting their connection to their community.”

This year, Yellow Pages® is looking for eight shots to feature on each of its four Adelaide covers. Adelaide residents are encouraged to take a photo of the best kept secret in their community and upload it to http://www.CaptureTheCover.com before 1 September for their snap to be considered.

By doing so, entrants go in the running to win $1000 cash or seven $100 cash prizes up for grabs on each cover. Locals who like snapping shots on their smart phone can also enter via Instagram by tagging their photo #CaptureTheCover and @Yellow_Au. If their photo makes the shortlist, they’ll be contacted to complete the entry process.

With Yellow Pages® now divided into 36 metro regions across Australia, the books are more local than ever – but not only thanks to the covers – they also contain the contacts locals need in both their area and their city.

A photographer with an eye for an award-winning shot, Adelaide judge Mark Kimber has some tips for budding entrants. Mr Kimber’s work is held in many major art collections including the National Gallery of Australia and Sir Elton John Collection. He’s studied with Kodak and Polaroid in New York and is currently the Studio Head of Photography and New Media at the SA School of Art, Architecture and Design at the University of South Australia.

“For me, a winning entry is always one that communicates a feeling – a great shot goes beyond technical
composition. I’d tell entrants not to be afraid of taking lots of photos – the more you shoot, the more great shots
you can potentially capture,” Mr Kimber said.

Locals can enter as many times as they like. Winners will be announced shortly before the new covers hit the streets in January 2014.

As you all probably know by now, I am quite hopelessly addicted (*ahem*), I mean, involved with Instagram – especially the fact that there’s such a wonderful Adelaide community presence. This competition provides a fantastic way for us to showcase all the best parts of where we live.

I anticipate that this year will be very difficult for the judges to choose their winners!

*The Yellow Pages were kind enough to sponsor me for this post, and all subsequent posts relating to the Capture the Cover Competition. Although, I absolutely would have been keen to get on board regardless of sponsorship – but don’t tell them that! ;D *
