I photographed the wedding of Ellen and John on 14 December, 2013.
As Ellen was getting ready, we chatted. We talked about the days leading up to the wedding, we talked about how she was feeling. Repeatedly throughout the morning, strong waves of nervous and excited emotion swept over her giving her goosebumps.
She wrote John a card, and sent it to him with a gift – for him to open when I arrived at his hotel.
After I reminded him to open the card first (you have to play properly), he sat and carefully read each word that she had written just for him. He didn’t skim over the words. He took in each and every one with such a sweet smile on his face. His eyes welled up with tears and he blew out a deep breath.
This couple were present on their wedding day. Because of this, they experienced it to the full. And it touched my heart to be able to be there to see such grounded resoluteness.
The continuation of something big. The start of something even bigger.
I learn so much from people like this. To be here. To be now. And I am reminded of the love that I have for my own husband.
I find that I miss him so much when I am shooting weddings. During the ceremony, my viewfinder fogs with my tears while I am shooting. My heart gets so full of emotion, and when I return home to him, I come home with renewed love for him. Like a deep breath of fresh air.
For this I am grateful.
Ellen and John, I hope you enjoy these images.
